Note: Drug tests will not be started without photo identification (e.g. driving license).
When you arrive for your drug test you will be asked to fill out a form declaring All medication you have taken over the last two weeks. This can include such medication as cough syrup, panadol, nurofen, sleeping tablets, herbal medications or antibiotics etc. If you are not sure if something is relevant - write it down just in case!
Please note that if we do not receive a purchase order or payment for the drug test at the time of the appointment you will be asked to either come back or pay for it yourself.
You will then be asked to wait in the waiting room or alternatively somewhere we can see you for a ten-minute period. This is a legal requirement that must be followed.
After this ten-minute period you will be taken up stairs and asked to empty All your pockets. The receptionist will then write your name on a foam cup and advise you that you need to half fill the cup. Please note that you are required to leave the door open.
The urine temperature will be checked immediately - this must be between 35-37.5 degrees (your natural body temperature). If normal, the urine will then first be tested using an “adulteration” stick to show if the sample has been tampered with or alternatively if it is too dilute.
Please note: - if you drink to much water your urine will become too dilute and cannot be tested.
|
|
Drink liquids as often as you normally would. Don’t drink excessive amounts.
Test early in the morning, or after lunch, the urine is less likely be too dilute and is able to be tested.
If the “adulteration” check is ok the urine sample will then be tested for drugs: The results usually take approximately 5-10 minutes to process.
An accredited staff member then signs a certificate, which indicates if the test is negative or positive for any banned substances; you will also be asked to sign it.
If you have paid for the test then you will get two copies of the certificate.
If a company pays for the employee to have the test then the employee will receive one copy and their employer the other copy. This is posted the same day, to the company (with the bill!).

Some people are using “adulterants” to disguise the result of their urine drug screen.
Although we have strict drug testing protocols and procedures that our qualified staff follow; in some cases adulterants are still being smuggled in and used prior to, or during the collection procedure.
Consequently all urine samples are tested with an “adulteration dipstick”. The dipstick tests for a number of factors that would make the urine unsuitable for testing, including specific gravity (too dilute a urine), Ph (acidity/alkalinity, oxidants, nitrate, & creatinine levels, as well as testing for specific substances like bleach, Glutaraldehyde etc.

1. Common drugs: You CAN and SHOULD take when prescribed
Antibiotics Anything prescribed by your Doctor for infection - none will show up in a drug test and may be life-saving!
Anti-inflammatories These are given for injuries, joint pains and strains and are important! They do NOT show up on drug tests and may prove to be very useful to you to prevent joint pain and to let you heal faster! By reducing inflammation, then they relieve pain - they are NOT "pain killers"
Pain killers If you are in pain, you need something to help you. Paracetamol and aspirin (if you have no indigestion!) will stop pain and are important to you - take them! Other, stronger painkillers can that can be bought over the counter usually contain codeine and should NOT be used without checking with the chemist. Take advice from your doctor if you do need a stronger pain killer: don NOT suffer through fear of "failing" a drug test.
|
|
These too, are essential when prescribed for the right reason: almost 1 person in 3 may be on them! These can be taken with no worry about drug testing, and include: - Zoloft, cipramil, prozac, aropax, efexor, luvox (one type); endep, doxepin, tryptanol, endep, Tofranil, allegron (another type) Parnate and aurorix in another.
If you NEED them, TAKE them! - they will NOT affect your drug test and to be effective MUST be taken every day!
|
|
Frequently the treatment of short term stress is with tablets to help you settle down. These include: - serepax, valium, oxazepam, ducene, diazepam, normison, mogadon, Librium etc.
They will prove POSITIVE in a drug test but may be accompanied by a Doctor's letter advising such medication is important (acute back muscle spasm etc).
Hormones Neither female or male hormone medications show in a drug test above and can be very beneficial, especially in the post-menopause lady: use it ! !
Heart and diabetic tables Any of these can be used freely, as prescribed by the Doctor - they will NOT affect drug tests.
CARE!! - "Health shop "vitamins" and "health tablets" These often have more than simple vitamins. Ask your chemist - most plain "vitamin tablets are okay but many health shop remedies have "extras" - and these may cause a positive drug test!

Amphetamines ("speed", "uppers" and other related compounds)
Opiates (codeine, morphine, heroin etc)
Cocaine (coke, crack, flake, snow etc)
Benzodiazepines (sleeping tablets, valium etc - "downers")
Cannabis (marijuana, hooch, pot, grass etc)
You are first required to fill out a form listing any medication you may have had in the previous month. This includes all medication - whether prescribed by a doctor, or bought at the chemist, "health" shop or supermarket - every medication - mixture, tablet, nose spray, smoked etc: - everything!
"A urine test is collected: -the toilet door remains open and someone is stationed outside the door to ensure the right "tinkling" noises are made. The toilet water is dyed; the cistern is sealed so no water can be added to dilute the urine. The waste bin is checked before and after the specimen is collected to check for "unusual" containers.
The temperature of the urine specimen is immediately checked and must be within the "appropriate" range. The temperature check as well as another special test detects addition of excessive water to the urine to hopefully dilute the urine so drugs will not show . This may be from water concealed in a pocket etc, or from drinking huge quantities. The latter test also detects if any "contaminant" substances are present. These are typically additives specially purchased to conceal or mask drugs in the urine.
If anything "outside of the usual" occurs then the test is declared invalid and another specimen is required at another time - i.e. not a "fail" but not a "pass" and twice the cost."

Certain over the counter medicines contain substances that may result in a positive test. Common pitfalls (see below for list of possible "false positives").
Amphetamines - any medicines containing ephedrine (e.g. cough and cold remedies, "cold and flu' medications etc such as sudafed, codral etc) will give a positive result for amphetamines, to which they are closely related.
Morphine - any medicines containing codeine (practically all cough and cold remedies, including codral etc and any "strong" pain killers including panadeine, nurofen plus, mersyndol etc): codeine is a side product of morphine! Even poppy seeds on some bread rolls etc will show positive (morphine is made from poppies)..
Benzodiazepine - the most common sleeping tablets and most of the "calming" medications for stress.
Marijuana -- "passive smoking" (concert or party). It is exceptional for passive exposure to be responsible for producing a positive urinary cannabis screen (although they are reported). Occasional users will have a positive screen for 3-4 days (or up to 6 days if concentrated urine is produced). Social marijuana smokers will retain a positive test for several weeks (up to 4 or 5 weeks) depending on body size. Heavy smokers may give positive results for up to 8-10 weeks at times.
If there is any doubt, concern or argument, then a specimen can be collected and sent to a laboratory where levels and variants of all the above drugs can be measured very accurately. It is your right not to have a drug test. However, most mines or companies will not allow people on to their worksite without evidence of a negative test. Many sites have a "zero tolerance" policy for the safety of their workforce.
